Staff Spotlight

 

Every superhero team has its behind-the-scenes genius who makes sure everything runs smoothly. Think Q in the James Bond series, Tank in The Matrix, or R2-D2 who quietly saves the day countless times by fixing systems, unlocking doors, or delivering critical information. For Unit 40 Schools, that field agent is Drew Deters, our Data Systems Specialist.

 

Drew has been the quiet force ensuring all of our information systems “speak the same language.” From maintaining student information systems to safeguarding the accuracy, reliability, and security of critical data, Drew’s work touches nearly every corner of the district. He ensures our data collection complies with state laws and policies, and that reports are accurate when submitted to the State of Illinois. This task requires equal parts precision and arcade high-score focus.

 

His reach doesn’t stop there. Drew partners with the Communications Department to keep information aligned across our website, staff directory, and new mass notification system and app, helping families and staff stay informed with the most current details.

 

This summer, Drew took on a particularly ambitious project: launching our new bus routing software. He spearheaded the transition, guiding the Transportation Department into the digital age. This challenge was heightened by the unique circumstances of welcoming a new director, a new assistant director, a new mechanic, and bidding farewell to several long-serving drivers—all in the span of one year. Thanks to Drew’s leadership and adaptability, the process not only stayed on track, but succeeded in laying the foundation for a more efficient transportation system for the future.

 

Colleagues often describe Drew as a problem-solver who combines technical know-how with excellent interpersonal skills. Around the district, he’s kind of a “Mr. Congeniality.” He is someone who makes every collaboration easier and the project outcomes stronger.

 

Outside of work, Drew is supported by his wife, Sara, a Paraprofessional at South Side School, and their two young sons, who are already among Unit 40’s brightest future stars.
